Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a high needs public NYC high school focused on preparing students in hospitality and tourism careers.
Our small school is comprised of around 400 students, many of whom commute long distances from their bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch.
We have a large population of students who are classified as special education and/or ESL and work hard to support their needs.
Students often come into HSHM not having all the skills they need to be successful in high school. These students are supported through after school and Saturday tutoring and through the work of their very dedicated teachers and staff.
My Project
Most of my students enter into the new school year with a fresh perspective, but unfortunately they do not have all the materials that are required for them to be most successful. Due to the high needs nature of our student population, our school doesn't have the resources to buy supplies for all the students and we are hoping that donors like you can help sponsor the cost of some of these things that allow students to be even more successful in school.
When my students have to worry about not having a pen or pencil to write with during class or a folder to store their notes, the learning is that much harder because their focus is on resources as opposed to the content of the class.
I hope to utilize the supplies like soap, disinfectant wipes, tissues, paper towels, and hand sanitizer to keep our classroom clean, avoid sickness, and make students feel as though they are in a good learning environment. The markers, glue, tape, and dry erase markers will be utilized for in class projects, posters, presentations, and other activities to help them grow and develop academically. Finally, the folders we will use to create student planners by copying calendars and hole punching them to be kept inside the folder. This will allow students to stay up to date on their homework assignments and other school work, without having to worry about buying a fancy journal from a store.
With these resources, the focus for my students will be less on how to get all the materials needed for school and simply on school itself.
