These resources do not replace what we already do well; rather, they add greater structure, deeper engagement, and more intentional scaffolding to our daily instruction. The units are aligned to the revised New York State World Language Standards (2021), which emphasize proficiency-based learning, real-world communication, intercultural competence, and the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational. By incorporating these materials, I am able to more intentionally design lessons that move students toward measurable proficiency while maintaining the rigor and expectations of our current program.\r\n\r\nThe built-in scaffolds allow students at varying proficiency levels to access the same essential content while working at an appropriate level of challenge. This directly supports the NYS shift toward performance-based learning and \"Can-Do\" statements, ensuring students are not simply memorizing vocabulary but actively using the language to communicate with purpose. Because the units are cohesive and thoughtfully developed, I can devote more time to individualized support — meeting with small groups, providing targeted feedback, and creating meaningful opportunities for authentic communication.\r\n\r\nFor my students, consistent access to high-quality, standards-aligned instruction is critical. I have found that when students are annotating they are more likely to understand what they are reading then if they just sit down and read. A good reader is someone who has a conversation with the text. They are making predictions or formulating opinions while they are reading. To help high school students become better readers and make sense of a text, they annotate while they are reading. Annotation is the visual representation of the conversation with a text. In the past, I would just give students one color pen to annotate with. However, this year I wanted to try something different. I wanted students to begin color coding their annotations. \r\n\r\nWhen I showed my students their new individualized color pens to use while annotating they were really happy. Anytime we are annotating each student gets their own pens. As we read, we choose a color to focus on questioning, and another color to focus on literary elements. In addition, students use this color coding method when they are revising their writing. They wrote persuasive paragraphs and made sure each component was represented with a different color.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for contributing to my students learning.
