My Students
My students are your prototypical middle school students. They love to learn (even if they won't admit to it) and they love to have fun (even when they are not supposed to). The school I teach at is a Title l school. The students come from a diverse background both socially and economically. A majority of the students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Every day I have the pleasure of teaching at a school which is consistently working to achieve both the dreams of Thomas Jefferson and Dr. King.
My Project
My school recently invested in supplying our classrooms with modular furniture. Our sled desks are gone and they have been replaced by a couch, 4 lounge chairs, and tables at different heights. It is awesome. It has completely transformed my classroom environment. I am seeking to make one addition to the setup of our room. My students love to sit on the floor. They love to stretch out and get comfortable as they are grappling with the world. Unfortunately my floor is solid cement with a thin layer of carpet stretched over it.
My hope is to provide 9 floor pillows for my students to use.
These pillows will do more than just provide a cushion. During classroom discussions and debates they will provide comfort for those who fear to speak. When the world becomes harsh they will provide a soft space to fall. When we study the harder history (genocide, war, slavery) they will have something to hug. These pillows truly will be the finishing touch in making our classroom a special place.
