Every class begins by embarking on a Calm Classroom activity. Whether we are stretching, relaxing or breathing, we must start off by focusing our minds. Once we are focused, we are then ready to complete our Morning Meeting, share and learn on the rug.
2nd grade is all about sharing and experiencing.
We spend a big part of our day gathered together at the rug, learning, talking and reading. Students are empowered with multiple opportunities to learn from active listening and engagement. Students need a functional space to engage in learning. I also believe that by incorporating rug time, I believe I am providing the students with an opportunity to meet their social-emotional needs.
Our school serves students in pre-k through 8th grade. We create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We are nestled in a west side Chicago neighborhood, unfortunately our neighborhood is a high crime area.
My Project
We need a new easel to improve student learning. The classroom easel is the hub for learning in second grade. The easel is used to store valuable resources used for whole group instruction, such as dry erase markers, big books and magnetic manipulatives. The easel will be used as a stand for big books, a place to display anchor charts, a whiteboard for teacher-led instruction, as well as student participation and a magnetic surface for manipulating math materials, such as pattern block and magnetic coins.
The easel will make our whole group learning space more functional and enjoyable.
The new easel can be stationary or move easily on wheels. The baskets below the easel will house and organize materials accessible for students and teacher. The larger board will allow all students to view the learning materials and engage.
