I have the privilege of teaching English Language Arts to students in grades 2-5 at our Title I Dual Immersion elementary school. One thing that I want to make a priority this year is reading aloud to my students just for fun! I want them to know that reading is not always about answering questions and taking tests, although those things are still important.
"Reading aloud builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about" (Reading Rockets, 2023).
Our school district has created a list of approved read alouds at each grade level to ensure students are hearing quality texts that are not repeated from year to year. Therefore, the books I read aloud to each of my classes this year will vary with each grade level, and the text complexity will grow with the students from year to year.
The lists include older classics such as Because of Winn Dixie, Matilda, and Tuck Everlasting, as well as newer bestsellers such as Stella by Starlight, The One and Only Bob, and The Miraculous Journey of Eduard Tulane.
Adding these books to my classroom will make an impact on my students this year as well as in all the years to follow. Thank you for supporting their growing imaginations through the love of reading!
