Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If they don't have it, it's my job to get it for them... My students are predominately Black and Latinx teens who travel from some of New York City's low-income neighborhoods to our school on the Upper West Side. The journey from their neighborhoods to our school is full of conflict and contrasts. They pass scores of exclusive private schools, zoned schools and screened schools in order attend our unscreened, Title I school. The vast majority of our student population qualifies for free/reduced lunch. They sometimes come to school without the necessary supplies.
There are many factors that could serve to impede the success; of my students; however, they consistently push through and persevere.
Every day, they come to school- ready to question, ready to learn.
My Project
Many of my students come to my school lacking more than just the tangible items they need to ensure their success. Many also come lacking the skills necessary to perform at grade level. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to ensure that all students are able to produce. Accordingly, I have recently become certified as a Digital Portfolio Instructor. The implementation of digital portfolios in my classroom will ensure that every student in my class, regardless of ability, will be able to produce a summative assessment responds to a critical, high-level essential question.
With video cameras, there is no such thing as a student who cannot succeed.
With the option to create video writing responses, I will be able to ensure that all learners are able to demonstrate their learning.
