Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyone has a story. History books recount the stories of important people all children should know. However, very few of the stories found in textbooks are about people that reflect my students and their diverse backgrounds.

The students in our school are primarily second-language learners and come from many cultural backgrounds.

Our school is a low-performing school with a high percentage of free-lunch students. We are located in an urban city in California. In California’s latest budget crisis we lost resources that included needed staff members and valuable materials. Nevertheless, we have a motivated staff that is pulling together to meet the needs of our students even in the face of devastating cuts. Our students are on an upward trajectory in terms of academic success and we will not be dissuaded by this year’s economic crisis. Furthermore, our school has been moving forward in bridging the cultural divide, closing the achievement gap, and striving for equity for all students. My hopes are that we can continue to develop a rigorous and exciting curriculum for our students that will fit what they need to know to become informed citizens of the world.

My Project

The books at their reading level in social studies are scarce in our library. We would like to address this need and stock our shelves with books that will open their minds to the stories of influential people from all ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds.

My class will benefit from learning about a greater variety of important leaders in American History.

We are expected to teach a Social Studies curriculum with few engaging resources. Enhancing our libraries with biographies of important leaders in American History will help my students identify qualities in themselves that will guide them in their future. Reading biographies will be a difficult challenge, but our students will be able to develop into better readers and knowledgeable citizens.
