Storytelling through art began before the written word; help my young writers find their first voices with quality sketchbooks and multicultural crayons. With these my first graders can experience their first writer's workshop.
My bright and energetic first graders attend an urban public school in a very low income neighborhood.
They come from quite varied backgrounds, with the majority of them being of African American, Asian, and Latino heritage. 100% of the students in our school receive free lunch. Most of my students are from single-parent households and cherish every resource they can use in the classroom.
Our writer's workshop focuses on engaging students in conversations through storytelling and the resulting drawings in order to develop their skills at creating detailed descriptions and organized writing.
Through oral storytelling they focus the topic of their story, then they draw pictures to accompany the story. The multicultural crayons provide a more authentic drawing experience for the students. They are able to portray themselves and their families with colors that are more true to life. The sketchbooks give the children a special inviting medium to ease their way from drawing their stories to writing their stories with confidence.
By engaging in conversations about the drawings, the students will develop more details to include in their written drafts.
Students who are able to express themselves are better able to socialize, communicate, and understand their world.
Helping our low-resource school provide this opportunity for its students will have a significant impact on their overall learning experience, giving them a creative and educational outlet they would not ordinarily have.
Please help my students' success by giving them this chance to express themselves through art and stories.
