Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a 2nd grade teacher at P.S. 48 in the South Bronx, the last thing I want is for my students to face a completely empty room when they walk in this fall. I can cover the walls of the room with wonderful posters and student work, but if the floor of the room remains as bare as it is now, my students will not have the comfortable learning environment that they deserve. PS 48, located in the Hunt's Point section of the Bronx, serves 99% free or reduced price lunches to a wonderful and varied collection of kids. Our school has made great gains over the past several years in making sure all of its students receive a good education, and one of the ways it has done this is by making sure that the students' classroom environment is a comfortable and supportive one. In an elementary classroom, the carpet serves as the focal point of the room. In our classroom, we would use a carpet for our daily Read Aloud and Word Study periods, Morning Meetings, as well as for a place for students to read independently and in comfort. As the room stands now, students would have to sit on taped name tags on the floor, which would make it almost impossible to develop the love of reading and learning that these kids need in order to be successful in school and beyond. The addition of a comfortable carpet to our classroom would help make the transformation from the empty room it begins as to a wonderful, comfortable environment that encourages students to read and enjoy their time at school. In addition to providing a place to sit and relax, a calendar carpet would be used as a learning tool in activities ranging from teaching days of the week and months of the year to practicing number and bar graphing. When my students are sitting on their favorite day of the week during Read Aloud or finding the day of their birthday on their brand new calendar rug, they will develop a love of learning that will stay with them forever.
