Help me give my students a classroom and books that represent who they are culturally, while showing them that even black children deserve to be in the fairytales.
My goal is to use story books, classroom decorations, and social emotional skills to show our majority black student population that fairytales are meant for them too.
Black students are highly underrepresented in fairytales where dreams come true and the character gets their happily ever after.
I have different magical classroom decorations to try to provide them a space where they can feel like they are the fairytale characters. This helps the environment that they are in make them feel special. It also allows them to become fully integrated in their classroom, and make it a dreamy reflection of themselves. Then I went and found stories like "Snow Not so White" so my students can see that the stories can be about them. I also added in some social-emotional regulation items to add in strategies with the morals and lessons they learn from the story. The headphones are for when we don't have access to a book in person so we find an available copy online.
