My Students
My school is located on the outskirts of a highly populated, highly diverse city in Central Massachusetts. All students in our district receive free school breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Many of my students come from various areas of the city to attend the specialized programs we offer. I service students with a variety of speech-language disabilities.
More than half of my students have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
These students have a large range of abilities. Some are able to communicate verbally, while others are learning how to communicate with special forms of augmentative communication such as iPad apps or picture books. All of my students that are on the Autism spectrum benefit from direct teaching of social skills. While working with these students, I teach skills they need for social relationships then we get to practice the skills with one another.
The other half of my students are in general education classrooms but require special education services for a type of language, articulation, or social disability.
My Project
Many of my students are non-verbal communicators. My job is to develop and teach communication strategies that will allow them to access curriculum on their educational level and communicate with others. Personal communication books allow students to access a variety of words they typically would not be able to communicate.
Students who have not yet found their voice still deserve to be heard!
In order to customize communication books for each child, I invest a lot of money into supplies necessary for creating books. I am asking for the supplies I need to create books for my students. Color toner allows me to print colorful pictures that attract the interest of my students. Lamination pouches will keep the pictures durable and velcro will attach the pictures in the book, making it interactive for my students. The mini binders are the perfect size for my students to carry around the school. Utilizing tabbed dividers within the mini binders provides an organizational tool necessary for my students to quickly access the pictures they need.
Once I am able to create communication books for my students, I will be able to teach them a new way to communicate their wants, needs, feelings, and ideas. They will have a voice!
