My Students
Middle school is a social time. The greatest strength of preteens is their ability to talk non-stop. Harnessing that strength and helping them to use it productively should be the ultimate goal of any middle school teacher. I'm working on it, you can help.
Our classroom is genuinely one of those stereotypes of a public urban middle school.
We sit on the boundary of several very diverse neighborhoods. After a mostly homogeneous elementary school experience, students walk into our halls and learn from, build friendships with, and grow with peers of diverse ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, and family background. It is a great place; students, parents, and teachers, are proud of the community we've developed. Unfortunately, like many schools these days, we don't have a lot of money for anything extra.
My Project
Our school is one of those big, beautiful brick schools built between the wars. You know, the good old days of chalkboards, desks in a row, and an apple for the teacher. Unfortunately, desks in a row just isn't our style. I have managed to find some old wobbly tables, but they won't last much longer.
My goal is to replace the scary old desks and wobbly tables we are currently using to work on with brand new activity tables. An activity table is a sturdy table that will seat 6 comfortably. The surface is anti-bacterial and chip resistant, the edges are sealed in colorful vinyl, and the legs are sturdy and adjustable. My students can use these bright, beautiful, new tables for two main purposes:
1-They can focus on team building skills and do group work without shaking everybody's workspace just to erase a mistake.
2-They can take pride in a classroom that has new furniture and not the old falling apart stuff they've gotten used to.
So much happens around a table.
A table is where meals are eaten, topics are debated, and life-changing decisions are made. Your donation to this project will help to ensure that my students have a table that reflects their worth and their importance in our society. Your donation will show them that we all have a place at the table, we all have something wonderful to contribute.
