Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I will be teaching 20 fifth grade students in a K-5 Title I elementary school that serves around 600 students. 100% of these students received free and reduced-price lunch. Many of my students face challenges inside and outside the classroom. Despite my students being below grade level in reading and math, they are always excited to come to school and love to take on the challenges that come with each new topic or subject that is brought to them.

I want to create a classroom environment that is nurturing, engaging, and a place students can thrive!

I would like the opportunity to provide this experience by making sure my students have all the materials and supplies that will help them grow as learners and help them continue to develop and grow their love of learning.

My Project

It is no secret that reading is fundamental to a child’s education. Reading helps develop a child’s mind, improves their language and communication skills, and most importantly opens the door to a variety of opportunities in the real world. Many of my students have not been in a classroom in over a year. For some of my students, this will be the first time they are in a classroom since the end of their 3rd grade year. Remote learning has been challenging for most of my students and it has been difficult for them to stay engaged and excited while learning over a computer.

When children read, they are building on skills that will help them in their lifetime.

I am hoping to fill my classroom with highly engaging graphic novels/books that will hook my students and get them excited about learning during this new school year. Many of our students have had very little chance to read from real books over the last year. Although I found digital alternatives, it was very hard to create the same love for reading on a screen throughout the entire school year.

My project is to add graphic novels to my classroom library. Graphic novels are not comic books, they are fiction, nonfiction, biography or really any subject matter with stories that bring the words to life with the aid of visual art that grabs a reader’s attention. Graphic novels are another way that I can get students hooked on learning, no matter their reading abilities or interest. My goal is to encourage my students to grow a passion for reading by having a diverse library available that represents them and their interests.
