Everyone Can Be a Reader

My students need small sets of familiar and repetitive text to close the reading gap. These student text sets will provide every student the early reading experiences they may have missed at home and make books accessible to all.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. I.'s classroom raised $577

My Students

I am a second grade teacher at an urban school in Indiana. I am one person, of many, who every day makes a difference in the lives of the students who enter our school. We build readers, writers, thinkers, scientists, historians, and mathematicians.

My school community is comprised of financially struggling families of all races, languages, and religions and extremely hardworking teachers and staff.

As a community, we are trying to give all the students attending our school an opportunity for a better future.

My Project

It is often said, "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." However, many of the students walking into my classroom did not have that early reading experience. They walk through my door with a huge reading deficit and are unable to access many of the tasks and texts that are essential to second grade.

With this grant, I am attempting to close this reading gap by reading books that most students get as toddlers and preschoolers but that my students missed.

Reading and rereading familiar and repetitive texts is part of building a reader. By reading one of these texts each day and providing access of multiple copies to my class, I am allowing my students to access a book in a way they couldn't before. I am also increasing the quantity of text my students are reading each day and accelerating their reading growth.

These book sets aren't just books; they are opportunities to allow all of my students to be readers from day one of school. These book sets will give my students the early reading experiences they need to be successful second graders.
