Our students crave opportunities to lead. We took over our Student Council Program a year ago. The students would work on a community service project every couple of months. We thought - Do they even know what community means? Do they know what service means? We decided to expand our programming. Think of Student Council 2.0. We believe that everyone can be a leader, at any age, if given the training and skills to succeed. Only being a year into the new program, we are having the great problem of not being to keep up the interest of our students. Our most important project involved building friendships with our peers with disabilities. We meet once a month to foster authentic relationships and build empathy skills.
My Project
Our Student Leadership Team meets monthly with students from our community with disabilities. We form friendships with them that focus on building empathy in our leaders.
The student leaders are truly inspirational!
They want to learn about what our new friends CAN do and create fun activities to do together. These requested materials would help build our students’ social-emotional skills as well as their leadership skills. The games and activities we are requesting will be fun and educational to play as we learn new inclusion skills and play with our new friends. The art supplies, construction paper, and scissors will be used to do fun things together.
Our students have the passion, the time and energy to fulfill their goals. The resources you could provide would allow them to spend time building those important relationships and skills.
At the end of the school year, the students create a movie about their friendship with our students with disabilities and host a special night that allows our new friends to be STARS.
