Our school serves students in grades kindergarten through fourth and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. We are a Title I school which means we serve students from low-income/high-poverty areas. Teaching can be challenging enough under the best circumstances, but many of our students struggle daily with ADHD and some even have the added worries of stressed or absent parents, being hungry or just having too many responsibilities in the home. School needs to be a place where they can be themselves and get help. They may be growing up fast, but they're still just children. My children deserve the very best.
When my incredible, fourth graders (especially those with ADHD or other problems focusing) can log on to a computer for endless learning or get up and move around for hands-on learning, they do it with contagious exuberance!
What I love most about them is that they are always ready to have fun! This makes teaching the best job in the world!
My Project
Raise your hand if you hate math. Raise your hand if you love math. Chances are, your experiences in math class(es) helped shape your feelings about math.
I want my students to embrace numbers and love math, and I think the best way to do that is to gamify math class!
My students need games like Head Full of Numbers and Mathological Liar to learn to think quickly about numbers. My students need to play with Equivalent Fraction Dominos to see the connections between fractions. My students need to have flash card races with one another, pull out a Jenga block to answer a math fact, and throw a bean bag at a target to score the most points. Students love to play games.
