Everybody Poops: The Science of Scat & Animal Identification
My students need supplies to learn about animals and how to track them. These supplies will help to engage my students with inquiry by acting as animal investigators.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The world around us is an amazing learning source! However, most students don't observe the environment around them, thus not learning all that they can. By supporting this project, you will help students to learn the animals that live among them, how to spot them and why they are important.
I teach about 150 7th and 8th grade students in Illinois.
The vast majority of my students are low income and high risk. Many of them are not meeting standards on state tests and are struggling readers. Most of my students are fun-loving and enjoy learning, with a little bit of help and excitement from me. Because they often struggle with traditional teaching and learning methods, I try to engage them in alternative methods such as inquiry, investigation, and hands-on learning techniques.
My Project
As I am working on my Master's in Zoology, I have had the great opportunity to study and learn about animals, including several methods to track and identify them. By doing this research in the field, I have been inspired to try to incorporate these great learning opportunities into my classroom so that my students can learn as much about animals as I have since starting the program. By supplying tracks, scat, pellets, and books on how to identify all of these, my students will be able to be actively engaged in investigating and identifying these animals. Since it is often very challenging to take my students outdoors and on field trips, I will be using these supplies to bring the outdoors in! They will be able to take what we learn together in the classroom and apply it to the wildlife that they see around their homes, communities and elsewhere throughout their lives.
By learning more about animal tracking and identification, my students will be learning about how to apply what they learn in the science classroom to the world around them.
By doing this, they will be learning about why animals are important and worth protecting. Because the future of the world is in the hands of the youth today, we have the opportunity to help them to want to save the world and get involved in animal conservation in their community. Thanks for your help and support!
