My students live in East Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Mateo, San Carlos, and Belmont. They come from various social-economic backgrounds.
My students are taking on the challenge of learning a completely different language: Chinese, in an area where Spanish is the dominating world language.
My students come in every day with high energy and eager to learn. They often comment that this is the class they look forward to every day because it is fun and full of laughter. It is very important for my students to have fun while learning such a different and challenging language.
Creative and fun activities are an integral part of our lessons to provide students the opportunity to "Shine" through their creative works! We utilize many tools, such as flashcards, whiteboards, whiteboard markers and erasers, poster papers, scratch papers for learning activities, as well as color markers, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, and other materials for creative activities.
My Project
All of my students are under a tremendous amount of stress. They worry about many things, such as their test scores, their social standings, their looks, their relationships with friends and family, their future, etc. In recent years, I have noticed more of them are absent due to anxiety attacks and other emotional issues. Some are in tears when they come to class. I have always avail my classroom and myself to the students in need, but the need is much higher than what I can do as one person. I want to bring awareness to all of my students about mental illness issues and how one simple act of positive words can mean the world of difference to someone in need. My goal is to support all of my students with an envelope filled with written affirmations and positive words from me, from the students themselves and their classmates.
Everyone needs affirmations, and affirmations are helpful when received at the time of need!
With this project, students will have access to affirmations and positive words when they are in need.
In addition to writing positive messages, the process of illustrating or decorating these messages is also stress-reducing! Two birds with one stone!
