This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

COVID has had an enormous effect on our school community. Students experienced, and are still experiencing, fear, uncertainty, and loss. In the arts, our work includes a willingness to be vulnerable, but living in a world with COVID, our children are constantly trying to soothe their spirits and protect their hearts. I see that manifest every day in school. Some are withdrawn, some are quick to give up, and some show a giddiness that won’t settle.

In music class, students have been struggling with simple musical practices of relaxing, listening deeply, and trying—but recently, that dynamic began to change as groups of students brought songs to life with handbells.

To build a melody with handbells, each student only uses one bell. It’s not possible to play the wrong note. Using melodies we all know is comforting, and it’s easy to hear when the note you’re holding comes next. So when the class simply rang the notes in sequence, the whole melody just…happened. The room swelled with a joy and sense of pride! Students relaxed. They believed in themselves, trusted their peers, and they all wanted to do it again. This happened with EVERY grade level.

I need your help to build upon this breakthrough! These chimes are color-coded to support my students in the process of learning to read music as each color corresponds to a specific note. The chimes have a clearer and warmer sound than the handbells we currently have, which will support my students who are sensory-sensitive. The handbell and desk bell combination bells give students the opportunity to play an entire melody themselves. The other materials will support my students in learning to read, arrange and compose music.
