My students need individual whiteboards so they can demonstrate their understanding without being overlooked.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! Six of my classroom chairs are mine from home because my overcrowded classes required students to stand up. My AP Biology students cannot perform some of the College Board mandated labs because of lack of supplies. And yet they achieve excellence every day!
My colleagues and administrators work so hard to fight institutionalized racism and to inspire, support, and prepare students as they consider college.
While we may not have all the supplies we would like, we are overflowing with passion, dedication, and respect for our students -- and we have produced measurable results. For example, our rate of African American students enrolling in four-year universities is nearly double that of the rest of our school district.
I am so proud of our students and honored to be among this staff, but I know we have a lot of work left to do. I would like to see ALL of my students leave here with ALL the skills and confidence necessary to break down any and all obstacles put before them, in college and beyond. I do not just want our students to be intellectually prepared in comparison to other students of similar backgrounds. I want our students to be intellectually prepared in comparison to everyone!
My Project
I would love to have individual whiteboards and markers for each of my students. As a teacher, I have to get creative when trying to gauge student learning as I go. If I assume that the understanding of the most vocal students is representative of the understanding of my entire student population, I may well be missing many of my students. I do not want to wait until a test or culminating project before I realize that my teaching strategies are not reaching half my students. At the present, if I want to gauge understanding without waiting for submitted papers, I employ strategies like thumbs-up/thumbs-down to a yes or no question to get an on-the-spot assessment of how the whole class is doing with the concepts. However, yes or no questions cannot reveal a thorough understanding of the science I am teaching. I would love to be able to use whiteboards so I can see diagrams, graphs, and explanations of concepts from all students in a quick, low-risk, high-return, whole-class activity!
Providing my students with whiteboards and markers would bring my teaching one step closer to succeeding with every single one of my students.
All of my students deserve to be seen and heard by their teacher, and this would go so far to allow me to see the students I do not always hear!
