My Project

I am a speech-language pathologist and I have the privilege of supporting a new and incredibly dedicated teacher in a 6:1:1 classroom. In her first year, she has worked with her whole heart to help her students with autism and intellectual disabilities learn, communicate, and participate. What she doesn’t have are the tools she needs most: enough AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) devices to give every student a reliable way to express themselves.

In our school, AAC devices are essential.

Many of our students are non-speaking or minimally speaking and depend on communication tools to participate in lessons, interact with peers, and build independence. Unfortunately, our devices are old, shared across classrooms, or breaking faster than they can be replaced. This means students have to use printed communication boards with no voice output options and a new teacher is left trying to support them with very limited resources.

This project is my way of surprising her with two devices—an AbleNet iTalk4 and a QuickTalker 12—that will immediately change her classroom. The iTalk4 provides four large, easy-to-use buttons for quick communication during routines and lessons, while the QuickTalker 12 allows for expanded vocabulary and student participation in academics, vocational activities, and social interactions.
