Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if the teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails." - Nancy Kassebaum, U.S. Senator

I teach at a Title One public school.

A majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. We have a very high ELL (English Language Learners) population at my school so not only are we teaching general curriculum, we are also helping students and parents stay connected to everything during the year that usually do not speak English.

My Project

My students are some of the most interesting kids I know. What they lack in background knowledge, they more than make up for in personality. They have big dreams of becoming football players, doctors, lawyers, teachers, doctors, and any other path their hearts lead them to. My students are from a high poverty area so a lot of these dreams unfortunately don't become realities as they are expected to work and make money for the families. As we all know students learn in different ways. This is the technological era and areas across the world are turning to technology as not only an aid in the classroom but now a necessity. These games will help in bringing up our students reading scores. The educational software will motivate them to get away from the pencil and paper that they don't focus on and will intrigue them to learn better strategies for reading comprehension.

We have struggled as a school to meet the goals set by No Child Left Behind in reading for many years.

Our kids have made tremendous gains, but continually fall below the benchmark, no matter how much improvement they have made. If I can give them another way to learn these comprehension strategies, I am providing another lifeline to some of these kids. When they feel successful about something, they strive to continue to grow as readers and continue to want to build their own stamina.
