Help me give my students sturdy reusable water bottles. We have been studying plastic pollution through the new city mandated curriculum.This would be a great way to culminate module.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students have been studying how the use of plastic is affecting the world especially marine life. They read articles on the life cycle of plastic, watched clips of documentary films and wrote a podcast with a partner to bring awareness to the world on the affects of plastic. Some students addressed government officials, community organizations and made personal pledges in their podcasts to help the environment.
Students collaborated with a peer to complete the presentation.
A few students chose to work and present independently. They wrote, edited and made all the decisions together. If one partner was absent then the other person would continue the work because that is what collaboration is about, helping each other. The students then rehearsed their podcast and they presented to the class. It was also recorded for the 3rd graders to view.
The third graders are also learning about water conservation and by bridging the grades through similar projects and lessons we build community in our school. If this project is funded, my students will know that their awareness of the harm of single use plastic was heard by someone who believes in the learning and work they are doing. Hence they will be motivated to continue to make the planet better and believe in human kindness to each other and the world.
