My Students
"Don't tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you have traveled."-Mohammad. As a world traveler, it is very important for me to show my students the value of traveling. I could show them pictures and tell them stories, but it would never compare to the lessons they would get from traveling.
Many of my students are from Oahu and never have a chance to travel.
We take the students to the Big Island for a week to learn Hawaiian History and Science. The learning is hands-on and very memorable to the students.
The school is in a low-income area. Many of the students and families fund raise and save up money for months to go on this trip. The school is set within in a very tight family oriented community. Students are very respectful and eager to learn.
My Project
The children have the opportunity to travel to island of Hawaii for a week long learning experience. This is a culminating learning and "Every Kid in the Park" experience for our 4th grade Hawaiian History and Science programs. By taking our students to the Big Island, they are able to learn, appreciate, and experience the causes and effects of actions that transpired in early Hawaii.
Giving each student the opportunity to walk in the footsteps taken by historical figures, allows them to see and feel for themselves the challenges and understand decisions made.
Seeing the places tied to early Hawaiian culture such as the Pu’uhonua, the city of refuge, Volcano National Park, and hiking Kilauea Iki Crater gives students a personal tie to the land and feel for the cultural connection our early Hawaiian ancestors felt with the land. The students will benefit from this learning experience by physically walking through the very places they have studied in their textbooks.
They will be able to tie the landscapes, the imagery, and even the historical sights through actually being there. The children will be able to see places in which events of legends took place, and develop a better understanding of how the past influences the present. Here they have the opportunity to see and learn first-hand Hawaiian history.
This has been a successful program; which has blessed the lives of many children over the past twenty years. Over time, our travel expenses for our field trip have increased to the point where we are hard pressed to cover them. Parents provide for these expenses but, this has proven taxing for them and we are limited to the amounts that we can request of them. We are asking foe a grant to help pay for a portion of the lodging expenses.
