My students are curious, ask great questions, and their learning needs are quite varied. Each student is unique and has specific strengths and needs in order to be successful. Some students require concrete materials, resources, scaffolding, and many opportunities to practice. These daily foundational skills/ activities help them develop flexibility with numbers, which helps them to better understand the math lessons being taught.
My students love to learn, build upon, and strengthen math concepts/skills through the use of number strings and number talks.
These dynamic activities make learning accessible to all students. Research has shown that students retain more information when learning is presented in a way that is fun and engaging.
My students are also very visual learners. Using a wide variety of models or math manipulatives (number bonds, ten frames, counters, number lines, rek-n-reks) helps them better conceptualize concepts that are being taught, while also giving them time to learn these concepts at their pace.
My Project
As a math interventionist, I support teachers and students in grades K-2 in the area of math. The resources that I have requested will help support students of all abilities within each of these classrooms. Building a solid foundation of number sense and thinking flexibly with numbers in grades K-2 is crucial for future learning. When students are able to construct their own understanding, it sets them on the right path for success in later grades. When students are confident and able to think flexibly with numbers, it gives them a stronger foundation in grades 3-5 when they learn multiplication, division, partial products, and most importantly the ability to think efficiently and accurately with larger numbers.
