In our low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. These adverse experiences may prevent them from getting ahead early in life. We do what we can, and many of my students receive a care package at the beginning of the year with clothes, shoes, toiletries, and a book from Operation School Bell.
My students want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly help their experience during the school day.
Now that we have started distance learning for the 2020-2021 academic school year, it has been my focus to provide students valuable instruction and experiences through these difficult times. We send home a monthly materials bag. We give them plenty of opportunities to be counted present, whether by communicating directly with the teacher, turning in assignments, or joining us live at any point through our five hours of synchronized daily learning.
If there is one thing to look forward to, it's the end of the academic school year! My project focuses on the end of the year and thereafter. Our kindergarten students need something to look forward to. Getting dressed up in ceremonial attire will help prepare them to anticipate a special date, recognize their accomplishments, and celebrate with their families.
I want our kindergartners to feel overwhelmingly special by dressing up in traditional graduation attire and participating in an educational ceremony.
The pandemic has kept us pivoting in different directions all year. Whether we are learning distantly, with a hybrid model, or in person, our team will find a way to celebrate, recognize, and document this event for all our students. One way that all students will be included and served is rotating by class to take pictures in a gown. If we are in person, kindergarten classes would reuse the robes and each class would have their own ceremony to also keep numbers low in indoor spaces.
