This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

No two students enter a classroom with identical abilities, experiences and needs. Learning style, language proficiency, background knowledge, readiness to learn, and other factors can vary widely within a single class group.

Regardless of their individual differences, however, students are expected to master the same concepts, principals and skills.

Helping all students succeed in their learning is an enormous challenge that requires innovative thinking. Kindergarten is such a magical grade to teach. Children are becoming students for the first time and their enthusiasm and love for leaning is contagious. My Kindergarten students attend a title one school in a high poverty area. 100% of my students qualify for free breakfast, lunch and snack. Our district has seen great upheaval over the past year. Severe budget cuts have been made across the board, including funds for basic supplies.

My Project

I am requesting nonfiction leveled readers for my students to use at home. Leveled reading books are used to help students practice and reinforce skills and strategies at their individual reading levels. Not all children in my class have the same skill base and knowledge of reading strategies. Leveled readers allow students to practice reading strategies using a "just right" text. It's a great way to individualize instruction so all students feel successful regardless of their reading ability. Many of my students do not have access to books at home. Allowing them to practice reading at home with a leveled text is critical. Students can take new knowledge and strategies learned at school and apply it at home with their leveled text. The following day they can return the book for a new one.

Leveled reading removes the "one size fits all" approach to reading, giving each student the opportunity to develop essential skills at his/her own pace.

The leveled reading system is designed to match students to books. Rather than having the entire class read the same book (which some students may find to hard and some too easy), leveled reading allows me to use a more personalized and precise approach to teach reading. The final outcome is creating lifelong learners who love to read!
