This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty elementary school with about 700 students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socioeconomic status.

My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom.

About half of them are English Language Learners. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school to enhance and reinforce their learning.

My Project

The world has been a strange place for the last year. It has been difficult for adults, but equally if not more challenging for children. It is hard to deny that there are a lot of emotions at play. Expressing emotion through art is an incredible and healthy way to release those feelings before they get too deep.

Expressing emotion through art allows students to release stress in a healthy way.

It gives them an alternative way to express themselves. It allows them to be creative and expressive. Whenever my students are engaged in an art activity, they are focused, engaged, and a sense of calm seems to come over them.

I am currently doing an Artist Study with my 5th grade students. They are learning about several different artists and their art styles. I have made sure to incorporate artists from different genders and ethnic backgrounds to promote equity, inclusion, and antiracism. At the conclusion of our Artist Study, I want the students to select an artist and piece of art that inspires them to create their very own piece of art.

These art materials will help the students that are now learning in a hybrid model, learning at school and from home, and the other fraction of my students that have remained learning remotely from home. The easels will especially provide my remote students a structure where they can create their art pieces. They will have the necessary tools they need: the canvases, acrylic paints, and paintbrushes to unlock the ARTist within them and help others see them like they see themselves and the world around them!
