"Every child is an artist." by Picasso fits my art room since I encourage my students with positive reinforcement to find their creative strengths as well as cultivate their artistic spirit.
The Salmon River Central School District serves approximately 1,525 students in Pre-K through 12th grade.
It is a small rural school district located in the northernmost reaches of New York State. Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and on the shore of the Saint Lawrence, as well as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. Thanks to Title VII and the Johnson O’Malley federally-funded programs, Salmon River CSD provides educational enrichment programming for its Mohawk student population, which comprises 63 percent of the total school enrollment. Salmon River is one of 13 districts within New York State which contracts to provide an education to its Native American students, with a commitment to preserve the Mohawk tradition, culture and language within the school system. Title VII is a federally funded formula grant program that currently services 1,017 Native students.
My Project
The 6th and 7th grade middle school students have art everyday on a rotating four marking period schedule. The 8th grade Studio Art class has art everyday for the entire year.
The studio art class has specifically asked to make masks so these supplies will help my 30 eighth grade students make them! The mask forms will be used with paper mache and newspaper then painted and the feathers will be added for design.
Our middle school has a S.T.E.M. focus curriculum which often collaborates with art. The students are often using my supplies to make their projects with their classroom teacher so my construction paper cabinet is getting very low, my scissors are borrowed, and the Sharpies run out of ink quickly! As an art teacher I have taught rigorous and creative lessons.
The middle school students LOVE art class and I want to provide them a well rounded creative learning experience.
We have many talented students who inspire me everyday! Last year I received over $600 in art donations which greatly helped. It's that time in the year where I try and stretch my art budget for next year. As you may have guessed I couldn't buy everything so fingers crossed I can have another successful year of donations.
