This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Pablo Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." In the era of Common Core, high stakes testing, and more, more, more being asked out of our students, creativity and arts education has too often been forced to play second fiddle.

My 700+ kindergarten through 8th grade students, largely first and second generation Americans, are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's Art program for many years.

Our tremendous school community dreamed of bringing our students an art program, and have been thrilled to watch our students creativity blossom. Despite being run out of a lunchroom, our two year old Art program has seen fantastic results. From September to June the walls of our school were covered with beautiful pieces that make students proud. This past year culminated with a school wide gallery display, saw five students represented in district wide art shows, and our first ever entry into the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest.

My Project

I have the privilege of teaching over 700 tremendously driven and creative students. Each day I strive to bring them new opportunities to practice expand their critical thinking skills through the use of new materials and tools, and exposure to new artists and cultures. I have requested a large variety of items that will supply our growing program with enough materials to provide a high quality visual arts education to our students. Primary grades will create art inspired by personal experiences and global artists, as well as forge connections to emerging literacy and a basic understanding of the elements of design. Older artist will learn to work through the design process and use critical thinking and collaboration to make informed decisions in their own work.

The arts are an essential part of a well rounded education.

By funding this project you are providing my students access to the materials and tools the need to enhance their creativity and build essential critical thinking skills. You are helping ensure these 700+ artists receive the high quality, visual arts education they deserve no matter their background, income, or zip code.
