My Project

The majority of students in my school come from low income families. Most of them do not own any books. Some live in housholds where they speak no or limited English. They rarely have access to books in their native language. These obstacles make it difficult for the students to have an early and continuous exposure to books.

Every child needs books and someone that can read to them.

Students that have exposure to books and have been read books tend to excel faster in school than students without books. It is amazing how this one small thing can have such a big impact on a student's success. If I can provide each student with their very own books, what a difference that could make! I would put each child's name in their books to give them a sense of ownership. This should motivate the student to take pride and care of their own books. The excited student may then encourage their parents or other adults to read the books to them.

Children that have been exposed to books are also exposed to letters, sight words, letter sounds and other reading skills. This is why books are so important. I want to make sure each student of mine has the same access to books at home as they do in school, especially over the summer and other school breaks. Your urgent donation will help me give my students the educational boost that they will receive by having their own books at home.
