Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our books need help! Many of our books are getting destroyed because we lack the proper storage. Kindergarten can be confusing enough, but finding a book you want to read shouldn't be.
Our kids are wonderful and appreciate everything, especially new books!
Most are low economic families located in an industrial area. Our school is trying to make do with our limited resources especially our lack of access to our school library. Each teacher tries to keep a reading library in their individual classrooms.
My Project
My students need a Help-Yourself Bookstand and a Mobile Book Organizer. I want to provide an attractive, welcoming, and inviting area where the little thinkers feel capable of finding their own books as well as keeping it organized so that everyone can find what they want. Another important aspect is displaying current themes and big books to encourage all my students, English learners as well as English speaking, to delve deeper into the themes. Many areas can be reached including concepts of print, vocabulary, visual representation and to simply encourage the love of books for a lifetime.
Currently, I have the books in baskets and keeping them organized and in good condition has become a harder task especially with no other adult help. They are also displayed sideways, due to the lack of room, and are not the first choice selection for the students. Finding a proper display and making a proper library rather than just baskets will become a favorite place for choice time. It will be a great addition to our little learning community.
This donation will affect me and my students in many areas.
My students will be able to access the books they want when they want. They will want to spend time there and share encouraging oral language and the love of books. As a teacher, it will allow me to use my preparation time doing other things than looking for my themed books and organizing and reorganizing continuously. It's also a long term resource that could be used by hundreds of children.
