My students need a copy of the novel Wonder per child so they can have a reminder of how to choose kind every day. Help me empower teachers and students alike!
My students are so very special. I have a number of high-needs students, including kids who have been kicked out of other schools, some who don't have stable families, so who barely speak English, and some with really hard backgrounds. Despite their struggles, every day they come to school ready to work and ready to learn.
90% of my students come from families whose income is below the poverty line.
Many struggle with hunger, clothing issues, finding basic school supplies (which we often provide), taking care of siblings or in some sad cases taking care of their parents. Most are years below grade level. Every one of them comes to school looking for a safe place, which we provide for them. They come looking for love and affirmation, which we give them. And although they don't all know it, every one of them comes looking for learning, trying to figure out what they are capable of accomplishing.
My Project
Hi there! Some of you may remember a similar project I posted a few years ago. I asked for 25 copies of this life-changing book so that each of my precious students could have their very own copy. Miraculously, I have a few left over that I gave to students who had been in my class the year before. This year, I have gotten my whole team on board with Wonder and the movement of Choosing Kind, and rather than changing the perspectives of just one class, I'm out to change the lives of an entire grade level.
Bullying prevention does not start with a program- it starts with children's hearts.
I'm sure you are aware that bullying is a massive issue today. It leads into hateful speech and behavior. My heart deeply aches when I get on social media- how are there so many hate-filled adults and teens in the world. I believe it's a heart issue. And I am out to change that. I've found a story that sinks deep into students and stirs a desire to be more noble, more compassionate, and, as the author puts it, "a little kinder than necessary." Let those words sink into your soul. Wouldn't you love a generation like that? I would. I've seen this book change lives. Will you provide me with the tools to change a small corner of the world, for the better?
I'm going to ask that you take one further step. Will you ask your fellow philanthropists to consider helping fund this project? It's ambitious, and likely to fail- sounds like my students, actually. I won't let my students fail. I will never quit or give up on them. Please, encourage others to support this project! Your investment here will multiply for years to come!
