This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you were a young reader, were you ever addicted to a book series? I bet you were. Do you remember how thrilled you were when, after you'd waited months and months, the latest book in your favorite series appeared? Well, 3 of my students' favorite series have new books coming out any day now.
The series are Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Magic Tree House and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
I'm sure you've heard of at least one of those. So who are my kids? How do I know that they can't wait to read these new books? The kids are the patrons of our school library. The school is a K-8 Center, located in South Florida. Bang in the center of the library is our Suggestion Box, which has lots of requests for The Blood of Olympus (Percy Jackson), Stallion by Starlight (Magic Tree House) and many, oh-so-many requests for The Long Haul (Diary of a Wimpy Kid). These titles appeal to third through sixth grade. We have around 100 kids per grade at our school, so this project will effect around 400 students. (When you donate to the school library, you get more bang for your buck!) Why help out these kids? We're a Title I school, which means that many of our families are economically challenged. Over 80% of our children qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
The school library tends to be my kids' only source for books. They don't have the money to hit the bookshop, and their parents, who are usually immigrants working in the South Florida tourism industry, don't often take them to the public library. Yet my kids love to read. The day your books arrive, I'll make an announcement over the school PA, and - I guarantee you - every one of your books will be checked out by the time school ends. There is a huge demand for 'Percy Jackson, the Magic Tree House and, above all, Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.
It's not too hard to make kids into regular readers.
You just have to keep them supplied with the books that they want. And boy! do the kids at our school want the books in this project! These particular editions, by the way, are especially adapted for libraries. They have tough binding and come ready bar-coded. They should last years. Think how many kids this project is going to help!
