My Students
Our school's focus is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Signature Program. Our signature program helps our students grow to be communicators, designers, problem solvers, and innovators. We are a Title I school serving approximately 430 students and are located in central Phoenix, Az. Our students are amazing! They have had many challenges thrown their way this year, but they do not let it get them down. They inspire others to never give up because each and every day, they manage to triumph even with all the odds that are stacked against them. Our students have the best attitudes and mindsets. They are extremely resilient and get back up each and every day and try again. Even if they fall flat, they don't let it keep them down. This is why "Mindfulness" is such an important piece to help incorporate into their lives right now. My students need to be reminded of the simple joys in life, taking the time to breathe and be calm, ground themselves to be present in the moment.
My Project
Using "Mindfulness" with both my virtual and in-person learners is a great opportunity to help build their Social Emotional journey to finding some inner peace. As a STEAM school with a diverse population; low socioeconomic population it is more important that we also ensure that our students' Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is implemented, reinforced and strengthened. This year has been unlike any other. Our students, including myself, were not prepared to tackle the academic changes, stress, and the long-term impact it would have on reshaping our social circles. We were left at times feeling scared, angry, sad but most of all worried if things would get back to what was considered "normal". These "Mindfulness" tools/resources will help towards the path of recovering and healing the unexpected changes that our inner persona with starting off our morning on the right foot. Each day and every morning one wakes up and starts off their day, if we are able to provide a sense of calming and focus when students arrive on campus or begin virtual learning through small exercises of "Mindfulness" the rest of their day will ideally lead down a calm and focused path through visual cards, sensory stones or completing a maze. Teachers Pay Teachers support will allow me to better target focal topics of "Mindfulness" to share with different grade level students, teachers and even families. Personal space and our surrounding senses are as important to lead the day. Our students are eager to find that inner peace and balance they once had. Through "Mindfulness" exploration and providing the skills to develop their awareness of both inner and outer experiences, emotional manifestation through their bodies, these coping skills will build and strengthen their resilience, empathy and overall understanding and expressing their feelings and emotions while at school.
