My students need to play many board games in order to be inspired to design new ones. This basic gaming library includes Settlers of Catan, Bohnanza, and several others.
Ever wanted to design your own board game? My students are interested in game design, but have minimal exposure to strategy games. The after school game design club wants to create their own games, and as every game designer knows, the best way to be inspired is to play more games.
My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in a large urban school.
They have an enthusiasm for games and attend an after-school game design club to learn how to create their own games. The students at my school have never even heard of these board games, let alone played them. You could help inspire the next generation of game designers, by providing an outlet for their enthusiasm.
My Project
These games are to build a class library of games for use with the Game Design Club. Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade join the game design club to play new games and create their own. We will not only play the games, but we will analyze them from a "designer's" perspective: what are the components, the objectives, the mechanics, and what strategies are effective in winning? By analyzing these games, my students will have more experience with games not commonly played by American children: "Euro games" like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride.
Any budding game designer should experience some of the best strategy games out there: Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan.
By giving my students experience with these foundational games, you'll be inspiring the next generation of board game designers. They will have a deeper understanding of the available game mechanics, components, and objectives before they design their own games.
