My Project

At the high school and middle school levels, the aim of the Careers and Technical Education Department in our rural school district is to provide as much real-world application as possible. Periodic interviews with local community stakeholders, business owners, administration, parents, and students all result in the same summation: we need to develop stronger communication skills.

To further incorporate Work-based Learning in our CTE curriculums, we have been developing an on-site 'retail' location for our students to work selling the products and projects they themselves create.

Agriculture students will propagate and sell plants. The Family & Consumer Science students plan to prepare culinary meals, textile projects and adult education courses. The Industrial Technology students will utilize a CNC machine, woodshop and 3D printer to create home decor to the public. All the while, the Business students prepare respective marketing materials, accounting processes and sales expertise to make the multi-faceted shopping location successful.

Teaching students the processes of manufacturing through distribution exposes them to what they may expect as both a consumer and potential entrepreneur. Forecasting and projecting sales is integral to the success of any business, as well as reflection of how to improve. Performing market research and understanding what opportunities exist is a byproduct of a solid SWOT/PEST analysis alongside a strong Marketing Mix (4Ps).

To continue building the inventory of our available manufacturing tools, a Laser Engraver would further enhance the offerings available at our retail location. An introductory level laser engraver/etching machine is a great way for students to become exposed to the world of manufacturing. The types of pieces students create will be as plentiful and varied as the student visions grown and develop.
