Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In the past, I have not been a teacher who likes to show films in class. I had come to see the television as something used to keep kids quiet on the day before a long vacation, or when the regular classroom teacher was out. My opinion, however, has changed, and I'm beginning to realize that a television could bring a much-needed visual component to my classroom. My school is an ethnically diverse middle school for the gifted and talented, located in an under-served neighborhood.

My students read a number of texts that have been adapted to film: Hamlet (Shakespeare), To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee), Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck), Lord of the Flies (William Golding), and Ethan Frome (Edith Wharton). In addition, they read texts that would be greatly enhanced with historical documentaries, such as Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Night (Elie Wiesel). We have two televisions in our school that travel between classrooms, but scheduling conflicts often arise, and it's almost an impossibility to use a television for only ten or fifteen minutes--it doesn't seem worth the trouble. Having a television that remains in my classroom would enable me to show brief clips of films and documentaries much more easily and efficiently.

I need one television with DVD/VCR capability so that I can take advantage of bringing a visual element to my classroom on a much more frequent basis than in years past. Rather than showing an entire film adaptation of a novel and then doing little with it, I want to bring in brief clips of varying adaptations (contrasting Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet with Franco Zeffirelli's, for example) and ask students to critically compare the two. I will encourage students to consider each visual text in three ways: the structure of the image itself, the relationship between the viewer, the image, and the people or group of people represented within the image, and how the image presents the world. With a television in my classroom, my students will start to "read" films and documentaries just as they do books, becoming increasingly sophisticated thinkers and writers.

Through your generosity and support, my students will learn to keep their brains running when they watch television. In an increasingly technological and visual world, my students need to understand that the image is not objective--it is an opinion, a viewpoint, a gaze--and often what is behind the camera, beyond the scope of the lens, is just as interesting as what is actually represented. Your help will ensure that my students develop multiple literacies and ways of viewing the world.
