My Students

My students, and I mean all 500+ that walk through the doors, come to us in need. In this school, we have to do our best to determine which need is the greatest at any given moment. Our students are from neighborhoods of high poverty. We are a Title I school and all of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch.

We try to provide the best education, services and resources for students from across 32 zip codes in Philadelphia.

We welcome students from group homes, foster homes, shelters, residential facilities, and juvenile justice centers as well. However, trying to ensure that their basic needs are met so they can begin to focus on education and have the same opportunities as students attending private, charter, or special admission schools is difficult when our school is already underfunded.

My Project

I cant imagine a more urgent and essential need for our children. Having the basic essentials of everyday hygiene in a country such as America is unacceptable.

This year, we have had students stay home because they dont have clean clothes and deodorant to put on in the morning.

They often walk around with their hoodies zipped up because they are trying to mask the fact that they were unable to wash and/or use deodorant.

In a school where all of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and 75% qualify for free TransPasses, there needs to be some additional support for our students who need essential hygiene supplies.
