Essential Tools for Mathematical Thinking

Help me give my students essential supplies to start their year on the right foot: whiteboards for team problem-solving; binders and paper to organize their assignments; and Chromebook chargers to eliminate their favorite excuse, "my Chromebook's dead!"

My Project

As a high school math teacher, I see firsthand how eager my students are to succeed—despite the many challenges they face. The majority of my students come from low-income households, and many are English Learners. This year, we're humbly asking for your support with these essential supplies: vertical whiteboards, binders, paper, and chargers.

Students learn best when they are actively engaged in solving problems, not passively copying notes.

But how can we persuade reluctant students to actively participate? In his groundbreaking book "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics," Dr. Peter Liljedahl explains that one of the most effective strategies is using vertical, non-permanent surfaces (VNPS) like large whiteboards.

Why does this work?

1. It gets students out of their seats and thinking. When students are standing at whiteboards, they become more active participants in their learning. Liljedahl found that when students used vertical whiteboards, 90% of them were engaged in thinking tasks, compared to only 20% when working at their desks.

2. It promotes collaboration and discussion in small groups.

3. It reduces fear of mistakes. Because the surface is erasable and public, students are more willing to try out ideas without the pressure of being “right” on the first try. Liljedahl’s research shows that risk-taking and productive struggle increase on non-permanent surfaces.

4. It allows me to see their thinking in real-time. As students work on the boards, I can quickly spot misconceptions, ask questions, and guide them forward—without interrupting their process.

Vertical whiteboards don’t just help students solve problems—they help students become problem-solvers.

While vertical whiteboards are about collaboration and exploration, binders help students organize and reflect on their learning. Many of my students cannot afford basic school supplies. Binders help students build executive functioning skills that support success beyond the classroom.
