My Students
My students are wonderful kids. Most of them are economically disadvantaged. All of them are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. Nearly 1/4 of the families now receive Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance.
My students come to school everyday with warm smiles and they try very hard to learn but they struggle because they have essential needs that are not being met by our school.
.
Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska. My students can't afford field trips so we take field trips on the playground. School is everything for them. I have an group of students who come to the library after school for extra help with their reading.
My Project
I have the pleasure of teaching RTI to a wonderful group of students who come to the library after school to practice their reading skills. They need extra help to become successful readers. These special sessions help develop their vocabularies and build their confidence as readers. They are very excited about learning to read.
My students eat lunch at 11:20 and by the time afternoon rolls around, they are starving and they need a snack and a juice box to power through their tutoring sessions.
I am asking for several kinds of nutritious snacks including a Healthy Snacks Care Package as well as two cases of juice boxes.
I am also probably the only librarian in the United States who has a washer and dryer in the library workroom. When my kids study I do their laundry so they have clean clothes. I have been buying the soap but it is getting expensive so I am asking for two containers of Tide PODS.
My students do not have the money for snacks. I am asking for the help of donors because I know that you know what this project means to my kids. My students need some extra help, please consider helping them.
With your help we can make a big difference in the lives of my students.
