Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My district 75 classroom is part of a hospital-based day treatment program that serves adolescents diagnosed with a range of mental health disorders. Our students come in each morning and spend the day in academic classes and therapy, with the goals of managing their mental health and succeeding in school.
Our students are high school-aged and have struggled to attend school.
All students must undergo an extensive psychiatric evaluation to be accepted into the program. Many are able to thrive here, in the small, supportive community the program provides.
My Project
The program is an intensive outpatient program -- meaning the students come in for the day and then go home at night. During their time here, students participate in individual, group, and recreational therapy, in addition to academic classes. We want to make sure that they can take advantage of our program.
The program is completely free, yet because of financial constraints, some students's families cannot afford the essentials they need to thrive here.
These essentials include things like clothing, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste. We want to make sure that our students feel their best when they arrive here for the day, and hope that these essentials can help.
