Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school started a newcomers program this past year. As a first year teacher, one of the main things I noticed was the need for school supplies as many of these students arrive from their home countries with little to nothing.
My goal for these items is to provide my students with the essential school items to eliminate the barriers they might be facing with being able to afford the necessary school supplies.
Along with this, as a first year teacher in charge of a new program, I was not able to get my own classroom. These items would also aid in me providing a well organized space for my students where they can take what they need and feel safe and calm in the room they will be spending most of their day in.
My students are special in a variety of ways. I teach newcomer English Language Learners. A newcomer is a non-English speaking student who has arrived in the states within the last year. A lot of my students are refugees and/or have faced very difficult situations and life circumstances. A lot of my students are also unaccompanied minors who rely on older siblings or extended family for financial support. The students I've had this year are incredibly bright, motivated, curious about the world, and empathetic to everyone around them. Teaching them has been such a light in my life and I find myself wishing I could do more for them. My students never ask me for anything, even if they need it. With these supplies, I would be able to provide each new student with the essential school supplies needed to be successful in school.
