Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.
My students are full of energy, creativity, passion, perseverance, and diversity.
Working with middle school students keeps me up with the latest clothing, music, and video game trends. I am forced to be a lifelong learner when trying to incorporate their interests into my classroom.
My Project
With new construction and old computer labs ready to be repurposed, Cabrillo is uniquely positioned to create an Innovation Lab that can serve a wider school population.
With an emphasis of project-based learning across the school, the prospect of incorporating emerging technologies into the current core curriculum already exists.
Language Art classes could use the 3D Printers to create miniature models of scenes from the books the students are reading. They could explore the settings in which their stories are set through VR technology. As Social Studies classes go on virtual field trips through our current VR goggles, they could create tours of the school or the local community using the drones. They could 3D print famous landmarks in the various countries they are studying. Math classes could analyze the data collected by the Microbit processors to propose solutions to problems. They could calculate and compare the efficiency of processes when emerging technologies are used. Science classes could develop prototypes for their design challenges in optical illusions, car design, and toy making. The sensors found in the Microbits could allow students to investigate more efficient methods of movement, use of resources, or quality control in a myriad of situations. Students could collect real-time data as scientists in the industry do. Students could submit their data of weather or air quality to local authorities to better inform them of possible risks.
With Remote Learning being a reality, the lower cost of Microbit processors compared to arduino kits allow for a whole class (30) students to be able to work at home. These can more easily be rotated between classes during material pickups. 3D print files could be sent to teachers for physical prints. The drones could be flown socially distanced outside, in the cafeteria, or gym at the designated time.
