Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come in from a low rent apartment complex where parents pay rent according to their income. Their children are mostly bi-lingual, mixed culture, and one parent families. As much as their parents want to purchase school supplies, they cannot afford it. It is a struggle for these parents to even buy clothing for the new school year.

This year, I am very fortunate that these students are eager to learn to write essays.

However, I would like to have sufficient writing supplies such as pencils, erasers, writing paper, color line paper, pencil sharpener, sticky notes and an electric stapler.

Essay writing will give my students an opportunity to arrange their thoughts in an organized format and express what they have learned in grammar and spelling.

I teach 30-35 second graders who are not reading at grade level, are English Language Learners, and have low self-esteem. They believe that they cannot organize their thoughts and transfer them to paper.

I have developed powerpoint presentations for essay writing that introduce the five steps of process writing. I also have some awesome prompts of subjects that they are familiar with such as food or toys.

My Project

I have about 30-35 students that have low self-esteem due to their living conditions. They believe that they cannot read or write. I believe that essay writing will assist in developing how to express themselves through essay writing.

Also, I make the classroom as safe and secure so that they feel very comfortable in sharing their thoughts and ideas on paper without anyone making fun of how they think.

Sticky notes will be used to organize and brainstorm their subjects and details. Pencils and paper are essential in the five-step format of essay writing.

And, the final step, publishing of the essay will be written in color paper and display for all to see.

The process of essay writing will be a skill that they use in the future.
