My Students

Charles Schultz said that life is like a 10-speed bicycle and most of us have gears we never use. Researchers at Illinois University found that a 5% improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness from cycling led to an improvement of up to 15 % in mental tests. My kids need to step up their game by cycling.

Benjamin Franklin said early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise; but today my students also need to exercise.

Many of the out-of-shape students at our older, urban public school are deemed at-risk. Over half of them qualify for free and reduced price breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. We have all the needs and none of the resources of other schools. Although they represent the very best in America, many of my students do not have the funds for necessary school supplies or frills like bikes, footballs, basketballs or exercise equipment. Our service area is 1/3 below the per capita income of the rest of our city. A significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel. My student population is racially and ethnically diverse, overweight, and out of shape. Many spend their time watching TV or playing video games. They need opportunities to get some physical exercise even in the library.

My Project

Everyone talks about the fact that kids need more opportunities to increase movement and physical activity during the school day. I want to create a reading/exercise space stocked with a sitting stepper, a bike pedal exerciser, and one elliptical trainer. Anytime they come to library, my students will be able to pedal and work out both their bodies and minds. This is a small project but it will have a big impact on my students who are often forced to stay inside for recess due to the extreme weather in our area. Unfortunately our school district is caught in an economic downward spiral and has no funds for this type of project. My students need the help of ESPN and Donors Choose. Please help my students become library pedal pushers.

The requested sitting stepper, bike pedal exerciser, and elliptical trainer will be available for students to use anytime they visit the library. Researchers from Illinois University found cycling helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus by boosting blood flow and oxygen to the brain. This project is a no-brainer, it will build both brains and muscles. Please help my students get fit.
