Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students often time have difficulty relating historic events to their own lives. This story is about a young girl who moves to California during the dust bowl era and becomes a migrant worker with her mom. I think this will help my students be able to understand the era and what life was like.

My students are fourth graders.

The majority are Hispanic, primarily from Mexico. Some were born there and others are first generation American born. Most of them are Title 1, meaning that they qualify for free lunch. The students have a range of abilities ranging from students with disabilities to gifted students. They really enjoy the read aloud novels that we've read so far.

My Project

We will read the story aloud so the students will be able to see what a difficult struggle it was living during the Great Depression and having to move every month to follow the crops' harvest seasons. We will compare the struggles the main character, Esperanza had, with their own struggles and difficulties.

Kids benefit so much from historical fiction novels.

It gives them much more insight to a time and place than what they would read in a history textbook. They also come to connect with the main character.
