Esperanza Rising: Social Awareness

My Project

Our Title 1, rural Nevada students come from various backgrounds, including generational poverty and bigotry, which means they have unique perspectives of the world in which they live. Unfortunately, children's literature does not always reflect the diversity and experiences of our students. As a result, students become disengaged from reading.

Connecting to diverse characters in literature creates a love of reading through building empathy for others who may or may not share the same social experiences!

Esperanza Rising is an inspirational book that explores a variety of topics from the loss of wealth to a life of poverty and hardship, racism and bigotry for migrant workers from Mexico to the US, and conversations about social justice from the viewpoint of children.

Using Esperanza Rising as a literature study will allow students to not only increase their exposure to great literature and great characters, but it will also allow students to build sympathy and empathy through personal connections to the characters and shared experiences. Students will also participate in literature group discussions with each other based on questions that they generate as they read. By the end of the novel, students will feel a stronger connection to each other and to the world around us.
