Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Let us celebrate the diversity in our classroom!
25 copies of Esperanza Rising were donated to our school this summer! Help us ensure every student in our large classroom has a book and the resources to complete our project.
My school is in a high poverty area of Chicago.
Education and seizing the opportunity for a better life is very important to our families. Many students coming into the 5th grade are struggling with reading. Some student have learning disabilities, while other students are English language learners. No matter what their ability, they love having their own book to read along with the teacher or an audiobook.
My Project
Esperanza Rising is a story about immigration and assimilation told through the eyes of Esperanza, during the Great Depression. Students in my classroom have immigrated from Mexico, Haiti, Africa, Iraq and various other countries. Esperanza Rising is a story they can relate to personally.
Every year after reading a book similar to Esperanza Rising, my students conduct an interview of a family member. Students learn about history, immigration, and about the struggles and triumphs that their family member has faced. Students then write a biography documenting this person's life. Having a classroom printer would allow students more time to work on their biographies outside of the 40 minutes a week they are allotted in the school computer lab.
I know this is a chance to engage all my students in a meaningful reading and writing experience. I hope to increase their comprehension, improve their writing, and create a piece of family history.
Your help will ensure these students are having a high quality literacy experience in the 5th grade.
Students' test scores will improve, but more importantly they will be able to read and write at a higher level. This will give these students an opportunity to succeed in a meaningful project and have fun in school!
