Imagine being able to interview your classmates, download the interview and watch it together. Imagine capturing memorable presentations, book reviews, acting out stories, and singing songs. The flip camera will allow the ESOL students to do it all and much more!
The diverse group of Elementary and Middle School ESOL students would have the opportunity to improve their speaking, listening, and oral presentation skills with technology.
One of the areas of language acquisition ESOL students are working on is speaking in an academic environment; most of them find it the most difficult area to master. Making a presentation in front of the class is often associated with the uncomfortable feeling of jitters and a lot of butterflies in the stomach. What if they had the opportunity to make a video recording of themselves, review it, make corrections if needed, and then share it with the class? This would reduce the anxiety and greatly build their confidence. Another group of students may enjoy acting out stories and singing language chants and songs. Capturing it all on video is a great way to build a collection of language resources and document students' progress.
My Project
The flip camera would be a great addition to our language lab. My students enjoy using technology and being able to use video in the classroom activities is a great motivation for them. I am launching a classroom webpage and ESOL reading wiki page this year and the video component would be very powerful. Sharing the work we do in class with parents and community is very exciting.
Using the flip camera for classroom projects will activate my students' speaking skills and motivate them to take part in classroom discussions, plays, songs, and chants.
It will also show the use of technology for educational purposes and the great potential of using video in the classroom.
